“My self-portraits reproduce a modern-day version of saints using my own image as all the saints,” Magaly said. “As a child, I was told to look up to saints that never looked like me. All of them were fair skinned with blue eyes. None of them had brown skin with brown eyes. By reproducing them with brown skin, I am creating a more relatable representation that is more inclusive.”

The artist, who hails from Bryan, Texas, serves as assistant professor of photography at Dine College in Tsaile, Arizona. Her photography, sculptural installation and embroidery has been exhibited at many venues in Texas, New Mexico, Colorado, Washington, and internationally in Mexico and Germany.

Magaly attended Sam Houston State University, where she earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts in 2015. She then earned her Master of Fine Arts in Visual Arts at the University of Texas at San Antonio in 2020.

Temple College will host an artist talk with Magaly at the Visual Arts Complex at 1 p.m. Oct. 31.
