Two recent Temple College graduates and Psi Beta members were recognized for presenting their research at the American Psychological Association (APA) annual convention in Seattle in August.

Cody Johnson and Daisy Arteaga, who both graduated from Temple College in May, are members of Psi Beta, the Community College National Honor Society in Psychology.

Their research project, “Student Perspectives on Student Success: Are College Classes Structured for Success or Failure?” resulted in a poster that Johnson was able to present during the convention.

“Cody and Daisy were among the group selected from other national and international college and university student research projects that were submitted for 2024,” said Dr. Christine Simon, Professor of Psychology at Temple College. “In addition, they will receive recognition in the upcoming Psi Beta newsletter, and their research article will be published in the peer-reviewed Psi Beta Research Journal.”

The research found that the vast majority of the 153 students surveyed felt their classes were structured for success. Instructors were perceived as “positive” and “supportive.”

The researchers shared that a surprising result of the survey was that 40 percent of those surveyed reported a mental health diagnosis.

Simon and Dr. Jamie Arnold, Social Sciences I Department Chair, serve as faculty sponsors for Temple College’s Psi Beta chapter.

Johnson and Arteaga, along with Simon and Arnold, were recognized at Temple College’s August Board of Trustees meeting. Johnson presented the poster and the group’s research to the Board.
