Both ensembles will rehearse and perform in San Antonio as part of the 2018 Texas Music Educators’ Association Conference Feb. 14-17.

The Temple College students selected to perform with the All-State Choir were sopranos Kendall Duffina (Belton) and Allegra Yauk (Belton), alto Kristen Cavallero (Temple) and tenor Sean Clark (Belton).

The Temple College students selected to perform with the All-State Symphonic Band were saxophonists Alvaro Azua (Castleberry) and Jeremiah Cabrera (Houston/Alief), bass trombonist Shane Baxter (Temple), trumpet player Christian Garcia (Hutto), clarinet players Chloe Ott (Belton) and Caelan Spidle (Round Rock), bassoonist Shelby Avants (Cedar Park) and percussionist Zach Zajicek (McGregor).

In addition to earning a place in the All-State Band, Alvaro Azua was selected for the additional honor of performing a solo concerto with the band. This honor is awarded to one student each year and is selected by recorded audition. Alvaro, who is a student of Dr. Colin Mason, will perform the “Fantasie sur un Théme Original” by Jules Demerssman.

Being selected for an All-State ensemble is the highest honor a Texas music student can receive. More than 60,000 students from around the state compete for the honor to perform in one of 15 ensembles, including bands, orchestras and choirs. About 1,700 are selected each year.
