Students from three area high schools and five area colleges received awards in the 40th annual Central Texas Student Art Competition.
More than 550 entries were submitted for the competition, which is coordinated by the Temple College Visual Arts Department. Works accepted for the competition included paintings, drawings, prints, photography, ceramics, sculpture and jewelry. The juror for the competition was Kyle Chaput, assistant professor of art at Baylor University.
The competition offered a total of $2,100 in cash prizes to the student artists. In the college division, the $200 Best of Show Award went to Sheri Wilson from Central Texas College for her clay piece titled “Twins.” In the high school division, the $200 Best of Show Award went to Ashley Normann from Georgetown High School for her acrylic piece titled “The Beauty in Boredom.”
In the college division, Awards of Excellence went to Amy Flinn (Temple College), Marissa Herman (McLennan Community College), Briaunna Jackson (Temple College), Maylin Sanchez (Southwestern University), Keri Tucker (University of Mary Hardin-Baylor) and Sheri Wilson (Central Texas College). Honorable Mention Awards of $50 went to Lynda Edwards from Central Texas College and Onaisha Franka from Temple College.
In the high school division, Awards of Excellence went to Kaylee Combest (Belton High School), Jesus Cortes-Ortuno (McGregor High School), Isabella Funkhouser (Georgetown High School), Sophie Kim (Georgetown High School), Halia Papion (Belton High School) and Tristen Pride (Georgetown High School). Honorable Mention Awards of $50 went to Lorelei Ney and Victoria Yakesch from Georgetown High School.
Of the 551 works submitted for the competition, 176 were selected for an exhibition that will be on display in the gallery of the Temple College Visual Arts Complex at 2105 South 5th St. in Temple through Dec. 3. Gallery hours are 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday or by appointment. Temple College will be closed for Thanksgiving Nov. 27-29.
The Central Texas Art Competition and Exhibition is sponsored by Altrusa International of Temple and the Rotary Club of Temple ̶ South. It is one of the longest-running art competitions in Texas.
