Tennis Coach - Dick King
Dick King has coached the Temple College men's and women's tennis teams since 1992, the year that the TC tennis program changed classifications from NJCAA Division I to NJCAA Division II. In 2005 TC moved back to NJCAA Division I.
Coach King’s Profile:
- Played NCAA Div. I tennis at Southern Illinois University - Carbondale (1958-61).
- Received a B.S. in Ed. from Southern Illinois University (C) (1962), M.Ed. from North Texas State University (1963) and did advanced graduate work at The University of Texas - Austin (1966-68).
- Other coaching stints includes: North Texas State University (1962-63) Men’s tennis; Stephen F Austin H. S.-Austin, Texas (1963-66), Boy’s tennis; and The University of Texas-Austin (1979) Women’s tennis.
- Has been a member of the United States Professional Tennis Association since 1968.
Coach King’s Honors:
- Named 2008 Coach of the Year by the United States Professional Tennis Association – Texas Division.
- Received the 2008 United States Professional Tennis Association Distinguished Service Award for forty years of service.
- Induction into the NJCAA Women's Tennis Hall of Fame in May 2004.
- Induction into the NJCAA Men's Tennis Hall of Fame in May 2000.
- Named the Wilson / ITA Women's National Coach of the Year for junior college (1998-99) and (2001-02).
- Named the Coach of the Tournament at the NJCAA Woman's National Tournament (2001-02), (2002-03) and, (2003-04).
- Received the 1999 Hershel Stephens Coaching Award for outstanding service to the NJCAA Men's Coaches Association.
- Named the 1994 Texas Coach of the Year by the USPTA - Texas Division
- Named the 1993 Wilson / Texas Collegiate Coach of the Year by the Texas Tennis Coaches Association.
- Received the certification of Master Professional from the United States Professional Tennis Association in 1983.
Since 1992 the TC men's team has compiled a 126-123 dual match record against NCAA, NAIA, and NJCAA opponents. The Leopards had their best NJCAA National Tournament finish in TC history by placing 5th in 2005-06. The TC team has been a NJCAA National Tournament top ten finisher nine times during King’s reign. In the same period the women's team has compiled a 143-116-1 dual match record, and won the NJCAA Division II National Championship in 2001-02, 2002-03, and 2003-04. TC finished 3rd in 2001, 4th in 2000, 5th in 1993 and 6th in 1998.
King's players have received twenty-one ITA All-America honors, nineteen NJCAA first team All-America honors, and sixteen NJCAA second team All-America honors. He has coach three players that were named ITA Junior College Player of the Year and two who were selected for the ITA National All-Star team.
