Dick King has coached the Temple College men's and women's tennis teams since 1992, the year that the TC tennis program changed classifications from NJCAA Division I to NJCAA Division II. In 2005 TC moved back to NJCAA Division I.
In addition to coaching at TC Coach King coached at North Texas State University (1962-63) as a graduate assistant, S.F. Austin High School (1963-66), and The University of Texas (1979), where as an interim coach of the UT women's team his team posted a (13-6) record.
Coach King received a Bachelors of Science in Education degree from Southern Illinois University (Carbondale) in 1962, and a Master's of Education degree at North Texas State University in 1963. He did advance graduate work at The University of Texas — Austin from 1966 through 1968.
As a player Coach King started competing in junior tennis at the state and national levels and moved on to play at Southern Illinois University from 1958 through 1961.
The SIU duel match record during his playing time was (47-12) and he compiled a combined singles and doubles career individual match record of (102-46) which included a (43-26) individual match record verses Big Ten, SEC, and then Big Eight opponents. He won a conference doubles championship in 1959 and won conference singles championships in 1960 and 1961.
Coach King continued playing after college in open and age group competition in Texas and at the national level. His highest rankings occurred in 1970 when he and former high school partner Dick Landenberger were ranked #4 in Open doubles in Texas and in 1974 when they were #1 in 35 and over doubles in Texas and #6 nationally.
Coach King’s Honors:
- Named 2008 Coach of the Year by the United States Professional Tennis Association – Texas Division.
- Received the 2008 United States Professional Tennis Association Distinguished Service Award for forty years of service.
- Induction into the NJCAA Women's Tennis Hall of Fame in May 2004.
- Induction into the NJCAA Men's Tennis Hall of Fame in May 2000.
- Named the Wilson / ITA Women's National Coach of the Year for junior college (1998-99) and (2001-02).
- Named the Coach of the Tournament at the NJCAA Woman's National Tournament (2001-02), (2002-03) and, (2003-04).
- Received the 1999 Hershel Stephens Coaching Award for outstanding service to the NJCAA Men's Coaches Association.
- Named the 1994 Texas Coach of the Year by the USPTA - Texas Division
- Named the 1993 Wilson / Texas Collegiate Coach of the Year by the Texas Tennis Coaches Association.
- Received the certification of Master Professional from the United States Professional Tennis Association in 1983.Coach King was one of the original nineteen USPTA Professionals to receive this award.
Although much of the TC tennis competition has been based on tournament play the TC men's team has compiled a 135-150 dual match record against NCAA, NAIA, and NJCAA opponents. The Leopards had their best NJCAA National Tournament finish in TC history by placing 5th in 2006. The TC men have been a NJCAA National Tournament top ten finisher nine times during King’s reign. In the same period the women's team has compiled a 160-140-1 dual match record, and won the NJCAA Division II National Championship in 2002, 2003, and 2004. TC finished 3rd in 2001, 4th in 2000, 5th in 1993, and 6th in 1998. In 2009 the Lady Leopards finished 9th at the NJCAA Division I National Tournament. The TC women won Regional Championships in 2002, 2003, 2004, and 2010.
King's players have received twenty-one ITA All-America honors, nineteen NJCAA first team All-America honors, and sixteen NJCAA second team All-America honors. He has coach three players that were named ITA Junior College Player of the Year and two who were selected for the ITA National All-Star team. Twenty-seven players have received Scholar/Athletes recognition during this period.
