TJO Presents Tribute to Buddy Rich and Woody Herman The Temple Jazz Orchestra will present a concert tribute to the Buddy Rich and Woody Herman Orchestras on Saturday, Nov. 7, at Temple College. Directed by Tom Fairlie, the orchestra will perform the first concert since their acclaimed tour of Europe last summer. TJO also will celebrate the official release of their new CD “Light Up the Night” with trombonist Bill Watrous during the concert. All five of TJO’s CDs will be available for purchase before and after the performance. The program includes many well-known big band arrangements such as “My Favorite Things,” “Naima,” “Nutville,” “Love for Sale” and “Woodchopper’s Ball.” All pieces selected for this program were performed regularly by either the Buddy Rich Big Band or the Woody Herman Orchestra. During the summer of 2009, TJO toured Europe for the first time and received rave reviews at the prestigious Montreaux Jazz Festival, the Beaujolais Festival, with trumpeter Randy Brecker at the North Sea Jazz Festival, and for the United States Mission to the United Nations 4th of July celebration in Geneva, Switzerland. “Representing our country at the US Mission to the UN in Geneva and performing with Randy Brecker were probably the highlights of a wonderful trip,” TJO director Tom Fairlie said. TJO plans a return trip to Europe during the summer of 2011. Sponsored by Scott & White Hospital and Clinic, the Nov. 7 concert will be at 7:30 p.m. in the auditorium of the Mary Alice Marshall Performing Arts Center on the Temple College campus. The concert will be repeated at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 8, at Georgetown High School. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students and are available at the Temple College Performing Arts office, Johnnie’s Cleaners, the Cultural Activities Center, Von Music, and the Scott & White public information office.
