Interlibrary Loan Information
- WHAT IS INTERLIBRARY LOAN?
- Interlibrary loan supplements the H.
M. Dawson Library materials by requesting items from other
institutions. This service is available to Temple College faculty,
staff, and currently enrolled students. Interlibrary loan service
is intended to support academic research.
-
WHEN IS IT APPROPRIATE TO REQUEST AN
INTERLIBRARY LOAN?
-
PERIODICALS. Make an interlibrary loan request
only after thoroughly searching for articles relating to your
topic in all databases/print indexes that are accessible through
the library. If you are unsuccessful in finding articles on your
topic, ask a library staff member for assistance. If you have
received help and still cannot find an article on your topic, then
an interlibrary loan request is appropriate.
BOOKS. Check the online catalog to see if a
book on your topic is available. If it is not, and you cannot find
another book on the topic that is held by the H. M. Dawson Library
that will satisfy your research needs, then an interlibrary loan
request is appropriate. Interlibrary loan requests will not be
made for books that are owned by the library, unless the book is
removed from the circulating collection by library staff, or the
book has been declared lost. Status changes for books will be
shown in the online catalog.
TEXSHARE. There are several public and
academic libraries within short driving distance of Temple
College. Temple College students needing materials that are not
available here should check to see if the local libraries have
what is needed. Check the holdings of these libraries through the
online catalog. To be able to borrow materials from these
libraries, you will need a Texshare card. Texshare cards are free
to Temple College students and are available at the circulation
desk. This option might save considerable time for the student who
is facing time pressure in finding needed
materials.
-
WHAT MAY I REQUEST?
-
PERIODICALS. Lending libraries will supply the
H. M Dawson Library with a photocopy of a particular article
rather than loaning the journal.
BOOKS. Books not owned by the H. M. Dawson
Library may be borrowed if a library can be located that will lend
it. Libraries seldom loan rare books, dissertations, or reference
works.
LIMIT ON REQUESTS. Please submit no more than
5 interlibrary loan requests per week.
-
HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE TO GET THE
MATERIAL?
-
Your requested materials should arrive within
3-14 days. Periodical requests may arrive sooner, book requests
may arrive later.
-
HOW MUCH WILL IT COST?
-
Normally there is no charge for interlibrary
loan service. There are places on the interlibrary loan request
form to indicate the amount that you are willing to pay should
there be a charge from the lending library. If there is a fee from
the lending library and you made no indication that you are
willing to pay, the library will not order the
item.
-
HOW DO I MAKE AN INTERLIBRARY LOAN
REQUEST?
-
Interlibrary loan request forms are available
at the circulation desk. Please fill in all applicable blanks on
the form, if the form is not filled in with full citation
information, it may be impossible to process your request. If you
have a printout with citation information for the periodical or
book that you are requesting, please attach this to the completed
form. Please use a new form for each requested item. Be certain
your name and phone number are on the form. Do not hesitate to ask
for assistance in filling out the form if you have any
questions.
-
HOW WILL I FIND OUT WHEN THE ITEM
ARRIVES?
-
You will be notified by phone when your
requested materials arrive. It is important that you pick up books
as soon as possible, as the due date is fixed by the lending
library, not the H. M. Dawson Library.
-
WHAT HAPPENS IF MY REQUEST IS
UNFILLED?
-
A library staff member will contact you if the
request is unfilled. In some situations the request can be made
again to other libraries; in other cases there will be no recourse
and the request will be denied.
-
HOW LONG MAY I USE THE
ITEM?
-
Photocopies are yours to keep. Books will have
the date due marked either on a paper sleeve around the front
cover or inside of the book on the date due slip.
-
RENEWALS OF BORROWED BOOKS
-
Request renewals for books at
least 4 working days before the book is due. You will be notified
whether the lending library approved the renewal request or
whether the request was denied. If the request was approved, you
will be told the new due date. You must return the book on or
before the original due date if the request for renewal is
denied.
-
FINES AND FEES FOR LATE OR LOST
BOOKS
-
You are responsible for any fines or charges
that may result from the late return of a book or replacement
costs for the loss of a book that you have borrowed and not
returned. It is extremely important for you to return the book on
or before the due date or make a request to renew the book as per
the instructions for renewals. Fines and lost book charges vary
from library to library and are often very expensive.
- CAN I MAKE MY ILL REQUEST THROUGH AN
ONLINE FORM?
-
Yes you can! We ask that you read
through the instructions on the Interlibrary Loan Services page so
you will know what information to provide
us.
-
If you are a Temple College student or
faculty member and you have never made an interlibrary loan
request, go to our Interlibrary Loan
Services page in order to learn the procedures for requesting
and receiving materials.
If you "know the routine" and are ready
