
metaproterenol (Alupent®)
Sympathomimetic, bronchodilator
Metaproterenol relaxes the smooth muscles of the bronchial tree and peripheral vasculature by stimulating beta2 adrenergic receptors.
1 minute after inhalation
3-6 hours
Bronchospasm (asthma, bronchitis, emphysema)
Hypersensitivity
Cardiac dysrhythmias
Tachycardia caused by digitalis toxicity
Restlessness
Apprehension
Palpitations
Tachycardias/dysrhythmias
Coughing
Facial flushing
Diaphoresis.
Other sympathomimetics may exacerbate adverse cardiovascular effects.
MAO inhibitors may potentiate hypotensive effects
Beta-blockers may antagonize metaproterenol.
0.6% (2.5ml dose), 5% (0.3 ml dose)
2.5 mL of 0.6% solution via nebulizer

Pregnancy Safety: Category C
Monitor vital signs for hypotension and tachycardia
Use with caution in patients with coronary artery disease and diabetes mellitus
