About the labs

Tips and trick to completing this week's labs.

When you first insert your Practical PC CD, and click Open the electronic textbook
you may be asked
"Do you want to check for a Tracking Disk to load Annotation and Syllabus links?"

Most of you should choose [No]
and simply continue on through the pages on your screen...
make sure you click every playit button; if you are again prompted to search for or create a tracking disk, choose Continue.

Only choose [Yes] if you have limited access to D2L, and will save quiz results on a floppy, which will require you to manually upload tracking files later.

If you are taking the D2L quizzes, you may stop reading now, or view information on how your lab grade is calculated here.

Read ONLY if you will not be using the quizzes in D2L

Insert a formatted floppy disk, then insert your Practical PC CD. The Practical PC Welcome screen will open.

Select the link that says Open the electronic textbook. You will be asked if you want the software to check for a tracking disk. Answer 'Yes.' The software will scan your formatted diskette and if a tracking file does not exist you will be asked if what you would like to do. Click the button labeled [Create]. Fill in your full first and last name in the spaces provided. For the 'User ID' please type your student ID. For the 'Section' please use the course section number, ITSE 1294 plus the section, such as 03 or 06.

Tracking Data

Recall, the only features most of you can use on this CD is to Open the electronic textbook. The links to send information etc., DO NOT WORK.

p. 11 Tutorial. On the Book on CD page 11, click [PlayIt!] DO NOT SKIP TUTORIALS! You MUST go through the entire tutorial for each assigned chapter, to get the full benefit of the material, and to get the highest possible lab scores.

As most of you will take the quiz in D2L later, close or cancel any attempt to create a tracking disk.

  1. The first part of the tutorial explains about using the arrow keys to go to the previous page, next page, or exit.
  2. Next, you'll watch a short video on unpacking your computer
  3. The different plugs and ports are discussed
  4. CheckPoints will ask you to click on areas of a picture
  5. Click to Exit, and view score.
  6. Click Exit again, and Your results will display;
Don't worry if you don't get a 100%. The simulations don't work properly on all computers... just do the best you can and understand the concepts.
Most of you will get your tutorial points from the Quiz in D2L.
    Tutorial Score
  7. Back on page 11, click the Page> tab to continue
  8. Read page 12, and at the bottom, answer the 'What do you think?' questions, then click [SaveIt!]. Click [Ok] after your answers are saved.

If using D2L to take your quizzes, your are finished with the chapter, and you may skip to Grading. You don't need to do the QuickChecks or GetIts... you will take a quiz in D2L instead.

  9. This applies only if you are using a floppy to record your progress; continue by clicking Page> to continue to page 13 and the Quick Checks. Fill in Quick Check A, then select [CheckIt!]. Each answer is checked, and then your score is displayed.
    Quick Check Score
Click [OK] and the results will be saved.
  10. Complete QuickCheck B in a similar fashion.
  11. Complete the [GetIt?] section, record scores, and exit back to page 12.
  12. Make sure you have done ALL playitsaveitcheckit and getit
  13. Click on the Tools menu item at the top of the page, and select Tracking Disk
    Tracking example
  14. Print your results for safekeeping, then exit.
  15. Continue on to Chapters 2 and 9, and complete the Tutorials, QuickCheck's, and 'Get It?'
  16. Go to tools, Tracking Disk, and print your results for safekeeping.
  17. Follow the directions in Lab 2 to create folders, and zip together your tracking and folder
  18. Submit the tracking zip to the instructor (see Using D2L for help on attaching the tracking disk.)

Grading your Practical PC Progress (D2L or Tracking floppy)

Where you are saving your results on a floppy, or taking the quiz in D2L, the sections have the same questions and are worth the same number of points:

Tutorial 1 possible points 10
Chap 1 Quick Check A possible points 5
Chap 1 Quick Check B possible points 5
Chap 1 Quiz possible points 10
Tutorial 2 possible points 10
Chap 2 Quick Check A possible points 5
Chap 2 Quick Check B possible points 5
Chap 2 Quiz possible points 10
Tutorial 9 possible points 10
Chap 2 Quick Check A possible points 5
Chap 2 Quick Check B possible points 5
Chap 2 Quiz possible points 10

Add the quiz points you earned up, and divide that number by 90, the total points possible for this particular lab. This is your Practical PC portion of the lab 2 grade
(Example 87 out of 90 points = 87/90=.96.6, or 96.6%)

The remaining portion of your grade comes from submitting your hands on activity into the D2L dropbox.
