Check with your Instructor for due
dates
- Launching Windows, view the Desktop, and the Task Bar
- Use the left mouse button to select the Start Menu, explore the submenus,
and finally select Help
- Use the left mouse button to close the Help Menu
- Double click the Internet (Internet Explorer) icon on the desktop to start
the web browser
- After locating the class web site, cycle through maximize, minimize, restore,
resize, and finally close.
- Insert your thumb drive/floppy disk, if you have one.
(Note, give thumbdrives time to start up;
when finished using a thumb drive, close any window relating to the thumb drive,
then click the green arrow icon in the system tray (right side of the task bar)
and choose to remove; wait until you get the message that it is safe to remove.)

- Open a command window (Start/All Programs/Accessories/Command Prompt,
then issue the following command: help
- Issue the following command: exit
- Open (My) Computer, and browse to your storage device drive letter (disk A:\, thumb drive E:\ or F:\, network O:\)
- Toggle the folder view by clicking the [Folders] button, then toggle back;
explore the details area
- In '(My) Computer' choose Tools/Folder Options...
In order to see the Tools menu, you may have to press [Alt]
Select the View tab, and make sure that 'Hide extensions for know file types'
is NOT checked.
Click OK. You will now be able to see the complete file name.
- Right click in the drive window, and choose New\Text document, naming it
test.txt
- Right click in the drive window, and choose New\folder, naming it lab1
- Select the file test.txt, then choose Edit/Copy
In order to see the Edit menu, you may have to press [Alt]
- Select the folder, then choose Edit/Paste
- Open the new folder... you should see your file.
- Double click the file, and add your name to it. Save the file and close.
- Right click the file, choose copy; right click in an open section of the
drive window, and choose paste
- Right click the new copy, choose rename, and enter some other name... but
don't change the extension*
- Browse to get back to the root of your storage
device
- Create a new folder called Junk
- Right click, then drag your text document to the Junk... choose move
- Select Junk... press the delete key.
Note: The recycle bin holds on to recently deleted files and folders, but only on hard drives,
not network drives or floppy disks. Your thumb drive may have a recycle bin.
- Start Wordpad
- Add 10 things, including your name, that you wouldn't mind sharing. See
also my Example
- Complete the Create-Edit-Format cycle
- Open Paint, and doodle on a canvas about 120 x 120 (Choose Image Attributes
to change)
- Choose Edit\Select All
- [Ctrl]+[C] will copy the image to the clipboard
- Use [Alt]+[Tab] to get back to your Wordpad document, click where you would
like to place the image
- [Ctrl]+[V] will paste the image from the clipboard to the insertion point
- Save the changes to a file named yourname-lab1.rtf, within the lab1 folder made
earlier. Close Wordpad and Paint.
If you need to edit the file later, do NOT double click the icon, as Word
may open, instead of Wordpad. Instead, open WordPad, then File/Open yourname-lab1.rtf
- Using (My) Computer, browse to the lab folder, but do not open it.
- Right click this folder, choose Send To and then select Compressed
(Zipped) Folder
- Rename the zip to yourname-labx.zip where x represents the lab, such as yourname-lab1.zip
Problems? Zip the entire folder and attach to an email:
•Send the mail to your instructor,
cc yourself
•The subject line should include
your name, your class, your section, and what you are submitting
•Make sure you attach the zipped file
SUBMITTING THE LAB
Log into Desire2Learn, choose
this class, choose Dropbox, and select correct Lab.
Browse to yourname-labx.zip and upload it. (Scroll down to see detailed
instructions)

To submit by Temple College Desire2Learn:
•Log into D2L, scroll to the bottom, and choose the
correct course
•When the Course Home Page appears,
click on the Dropbox link.
•You may click on Discussions, Dropbox, or Quizzes below, for more info
Dropbox directions

1. Choose the class for which you want to drop off an assignment.
2. Find the Dropbox tool, click on it.
3. Choose the appropriate Dropbox folder, click on it.
4. Choose [Add a File], then choose [Browse]; you may need to choose (My) Computer first
5. Find the file that you would like to upload and click open, then choose [Upload]
6. Type in a short description or comment about the file, if you like.
7. Select [Add] for any additional files that may be pertinent, and repeat
8. After your files have been selected, click [Submit]. (To upload and submit you will always click at least twice)
9. Some files may take a long time to upload (especially if there
are graphics in the file).
- Did my file get through?
1. Go to the Dropbox tool
2. Click the number under Submissions
3. All of the assignments that have been submitted will be listed.
