General Lab Directions
Note: There is not enough time in lecture to cover all the material; read your book BEFORE you begin the lab
Note: Typically labs will require you to invest some time in the lab, outside of class lecture hours

•Note: Please read the related overview material before continuing
Check with your Instructor for due date, typically Friday, 11:59PM (see due dates)

•Theory introduced in Lab 5 (link to theory part of lab)
•Begin creating, editing, and modifying documents for Lab 5 (link to activity requirements)
•Answer questions concerning topics covered in Lab 5
(You will later transfer this information into a D2L quiz)

At the end of this process,
1) you will submit the document files by zipping them, and placing them in the Desire2Learn dropbox area. Instructions on zipping are below.
2) you will be 'turning in' your documentation and Q&A by taking the lab 5 quiz in the Quizzes area of Desire2Learn. So, to get the best score, complete the documentation and Q&A as directed below, first.

Part 1: Documentation, (30%)

At the end of this process, you will be turning in answers using the Quizzes area of Desire2Learn, based on the following. So, to get the best score, fill in all the answers in this document first.

Theory

In Overview 7, the material covered the basics of photo editing… crop, brightness-contrast, rotate, and image size. This is the most straightforward use of Photoshop, to make minor adjustments to your artifacts for delivery in your portfolio.

But we have also mentioned the need to create various versions of your artifacts … high quality png for printing, and good quality jpeg for web delivery.  Part of Overview 8 is in the generation of these various deliverables.
(A cardinal rule of thumb with images is never to destroy an original… you start with the best possible image you can get your hands on, and get it into the lossless png format… then make your variations for print or web delivery.)

And while this is not a Photoshop class per se, we still need a bit more knowledge to address a couple of other legitimate portfolio issues … such as the ability to add a copyright mark to an image, or perhaps combining images for galley sheets, etc.

The best way to do this is to use layers:
a transparent layer for text that remains separate from the image until you are happy with the results, or
placing different images on different transparent layers until they are in the proper sequence.

These transparent layers  are not a part of the png or jpeg format, so while you are in this editing process, you should save in Photoshop’s native format, psd. The psd file is not a deliverable, as only Photoshop users can open the file, but is a the only way to maintain the multiple transparent layers you may generate while creating your final jpeg or png.

Lab 5 then moves from Overview 7 to Overview 8: demonstrating the use of layers to combine images, and then saving as different file types.

Make sure you compare the psd size to the png size to the jpg size.

(Overview 9 will focus on choices we can make in the saving of a png, as well as introducing another variation of multiple images save in the same file… movies or video.)
