Part 2 Windows File and Folder Activities

Many Windows computers are set up to hide known file extensions; this can be very confusing for computer students. To set the computers you use to display the entire file name:
     • Cick Start, then open My Computer or Windows Explorer (if using Vista, it is called simply Computer)
     • Choose Tools\Folder Options... (for Vista users, press the [Alt] key to reveal the Tools menu), then select Folder Options)
    Change Folder Options
     • Choose the View tab
     • Click off the check mark next to 'Hide extensions for know file types'
           • Click OK
    Change Folder Options Dialog Box
  2. Choose storage location (a place that your computer can save files and folders)
Using 'My Computer' or 'Computer,' browse to the drive you would like to save your work on
Most computers identify the hard drive as C:, a folder often used on the C: drive is My Documents (simply 'Documents' in Vista)
Most computers identify the floppy drive (if present) as A:
Most computers identify the thumb drives (if present) as E: or F:
If you are working on campus, you might use your O: drive, or your thumb drive, etc.

Recall, when using save as... you may need to click the Computer of My Computer link to browse to where you wish to save

  3. Create a File
Right click in the Folder window, and Choose New/Text document; name it test.txt
  4. Create a Folder
