UNIX GUIs © R. Craig Collins, 2005/6
The Linux GUI is derived from the MIT X-Windows system (UNIX GUIs started in
1978), and is actually fairly close to the Xerox Alto computer (1972; the 'first'
PC with GUI).
(Windows started life as Interface Manager in 1981 and also copied many ideas
from the Alto.)
The Linux GUIs that most people know (GNOME, KDE) are derivatives of HP-VUE
(from the early 1990's).
The OSX Apple operating system is called AQUA, and runs on a UNIX kernel, though
they released their first GUI based system in 1984.
