Installing Windows 2003

General Lab Directions Note: There is not enough time in lecture to cover all the material; read your book BEFORE you begin the lab
- Check with your Instructor for due date
- Document the required steps before you start the lab (this documentation will be turned in): 30%
- Hands on Grading
- 0 mistakes: 30%
- 1 or 2 mistakes: 25%
- 3 or 4 mistakes: 20%
- 5 or 6 mistakes: 10%
- Activity: 40%
- Document your computer
- Make sure your computer can boot from CD
- Press [Delete] key when booting computer to access BIOS, Access Boot menu, select CD, hit enter. Change order to search CD first. Save and exit
- Place Windows 2003 CD in drive, and boot computer
- Windows Setup will copy files to hard drive
- Set up Notification will ask if you wish to install or repari, choos Set up now
- Agree to EULA with [F8]
- If needed remove partitions used by Linux, etc.
- Select target partition to remove and press [D] key, then accept choice with [L] key
- Don't simply install to the new partition, use C to Create a sized
partiiton that uses all but about 1 GB: (ie 19.5 GB dirve format 18000),
and format as NTFS (not Quick)
- Install to the new partition
- Files will be copied, and system will reboot
- At the Regional settings, go to [Next], and enter name and organization
- Enter Product Key
- Accept Per Server option for Licence
- When prompted for Administrator's password, leave blank, and accept this choice.
- Set time zone to Central
- Reboot Ends installation
Configure your Windows 2003 server for class use
- Log in
- DO NOT SET UP SERVICES AT THIS TIME
- Go to the System Control Panel, Hardware, Device Manager, and fix
NIC driver, etc. using the drivers on the Motherboard
CD

- Note: top of tree is your server's name
- Insert Driver CD, and close any autorun windows
- Right click on Ethernet Controller (NIC) and choose to update driver
- Choose Install from a list or specific location
- Choose Search removable media, the driver will load
- Repeat as needed
- Anytime updating a driver makes things worse, you may roll back the driver.

- Access Administrative Tools\Computer Management
Right click User folder to create new user, using school username
Password must be complex... use something like Password2
Turn Off user must reset password, and turn on Password never expires
If using the Limited 180 copy of Server, you may not use simple password.
If using a full version of Server you must make changes if using simple passwords

*Administrative Tools and choose Computer Management or Active Directory Users and Computers

- Open Groups folder
- Right Click Administrator Group
- Add your username as a member of the Administrators group
(use Check Names button)
- Test Log in
- Summarize Activity as part of documentation,
