General Lab Directions
Note: There is not enough time in lecture to cover all the material; read background info BEFORE you begin the lab
  • Check with your Instructor for due date
  • Document the required steps before you start the lab (this documentation will be turned in): 30%
  • Hands on Grading
    • 0 mistakes: 30%
    • 1 or 2 mistakes: 25%
    • 3 or 4 mistakes: 20%
    • 5 or 6 mistakes: 10%
  • Activity: 40%

    2003 Groups
  • Create a group called Faculty (local, security)
  • Create a group called Students (local, security)
  • Create a new user who is a member of the Faculty group, and the Server Operator group
  • Create a new user who is a member of Students group, and the Server Operator group
  • Create a folder named Faculty, and place within it a text document that says 'Faculty'
  • Create a folder named Students, and place within it a text document that says 'Students'
  • Change the security settings so Faculty have full control over the 'Faculty' and 'Student' folder
  • Change the security settings so Students have full control over the the 'Student' folder
  • Add a screen capture to your documentation
  • Change the security settings so Students have only list and read in the 'Faculty' folder
  • Add a screen capture to your documentation
  • Test by logging in as your new student and see what they can change
  • Test by logging in as your new faculty and see what they can change
  • Modify your faculty group, and allow them to print
  • [Alt] [Prt Scn] and paste image into your documentation
  • Modify your student group, and prevent them from printing
  • [Alt] [Prt Scn] and paste image into your documentation

XP

  • Follow the directions on page 361 to rename the Recycle bin
  • Add a screen capture to your documentation
  • Follow the directions on page 362 to rename the Recycle bin back

2003 (since XP in the lab is locked down)

  • Remove the Paint from the system
  • Add a screen capture to your documentation
  • Add Paint back

    Summary
  • Summarize the remainder of the Chapter as part of documentation, focusing on:
  • Registry
       * areas controlled
       * the five 'files' of the registry
  • describe at least 10 of the diagnostic tools of XP
  • Discuss XP Boot troubleshooting
  • Compare and contrast DOS and Windows start up disks
