General Lab Directions
Note: There is not enough time in lecture to cover all the material; read background info BEFORE you begin the lab
  • Check with your Instructor for due date
  • Document the required steps before you start the lab (this documentation will be turned in): 30%
  • Hands on Grading
    • 0 mistakes: 30%
    • 1 or 2 mistakes: 25%
    • 3 or 4 mistakes: 20%
    • 5 or 6 mistakes: 10%
  • Activity: 40%

  • Press the F8 key at startup, Choose Safe Mode with Network Support,
        Print Screen; After boot is successful, Open Word Pad, and choose Edit/paste,
        save this document to become the basis of your documentation. Reboot as Administrator
  • Describe Control Panel/System/Advanced/Startup and Recovery
  • Open Start/Programs/Accessories/System Tools/Backup and select Advanced Mode;
        Document Use of the ASD (formerly ERD) and Setup Disk
        Go to Advanced Mode, [Alt]+Print Screen, Open your WordPad documentation and Edit/Paste to your documentation
  • From here on, please add screen shots to your documentation to show you did explored a window, or completed an activity
  • Explore the Dependency Walker
    :     Install from Microsoft (Search for Dependency Walker) or right click/Save Target as this link; Save the zip file on the desktop
        Double Click the file to unzip
        Extract to c:\windows
           Browse to the Windows folder and locate the newest folder, Developers.
           Open that and subsequent folders until you locate depends.exe.
           Right click depends.exe and choose copy
           Browse to c:\documents and settings\all users\start menu\programs\Accessories\System Tools
           Right click and add shortcut
         Start/All Programs/Accessories/System Tools/depends.exe
        Set to display all supporting files used by Internet Explorer
  • Document and create a dynamic disk, and a learn about simple volumes:
        Start/Programs/Administrative Tools/Computer Management
        In the left pane, select Disk Management
        Right click a basic disk (Disk0), and select Convert to Dynamic Disk
        Restart if needed
        Describe setting up new volumes, if there was unallocated space
        ie, right click unallocated space
        Choose New Volume
        Select Simple, and complete Wizard
        Close
  • Discuss the Event Viewer and logs
  • Using the Task Manager, display the Performance Tab
  • Using the Performance tool in the Administrative Tools, Add a Counter:
        Open Control Panel/Administrative Tools
        Double Click Performance
        Right Click pane and choose Add Counters
        From the Performance object drop down list, choose Memory Object
        Locate and select Available Bytes counter, then Add
        Scroll to Page Faults/sec, then Add
        Close
  • Discuss Dr. Watson (Accessories/System/System Info/Tools)
  • Summarize the remainder of the Chapter as part of documentation.
