General Lab Directions
Note: There is not enough time in lecture to cover all the material; read background info BEFORE you begin the lab
  • Check with your Instructor for due date
  • Document the required steps before you start the lab (this documentation will be turned in): 30%
  • Hands on Grading
    • 0 mistakes: 30%
    • 1 or 2 mistakes: 25%
    • 3 or 4 mistakes: 20%
    • 5 or 6 mistakes: 10%
  • Activity: 40%

Brief Overview, you will need to document the specifics of the Installation
  1. Make sure your computer can boot from CD
    1. Press [Delete] key when booting computer to access BIOS, Access Boot menu, select CD, hit enter. Change order to search CD first. Save and exit
  2. Place Windows 2003 CD in drive, and boot computer
  3. Windows Setup will copy files to hard drive
  4. Set up Notification will ask if you wish to install or repari, choos Set up now
  5. Agree to EULA with [F8]
  6. If needed remove partitions used by Linux, etc.
    1. Select target partition to remove and press [D] key, then accept choice with [L] key
  7. Create new partition for C:, and format as NTFS (not Quick)
  8. Install to the new partition
  9. Files will be copied, and system will reboot
  10. At the Regional settings, go to [Next], and enter name and organization
  11. Enter Product Key
  12. Accept Per Server option for Licence
  13. When prompted for Administrator's password, leave blank, and accept this choice.
  14. Set time zone to Central
  15. Reboot Ends installation
Configure your Windows 2003 server for class use
  1. Log in
  2. DO NOT SET UP SERVICES AT THIS TIME
  3. Access Computer Management Control Panel
  4. Right click User folder to create new user, using school log in info
  5. Open Groups folder
  6. Right Click Administrator Group
  7. Add your username as a member of the Administrators group
  8. Test Log in
Hardware component
  1. Open Device Manager (Start/Control Panel/System/hardware/Device Manager

    Note: top of tree is your server's name
  2. Insert Driver CD, and close any autorun windows
  3. Right click on Ethernet Controller (NIC) and choose to update driver
  4. Choose Install from a list or specific location
  5. Choose Search removable media, the driver will load
  6. Repeat for Multimedia Audio Controller (Soundcard)
  7. Start IE, go to www.microsoft.com, and Add site to Safe list
  8. Activate product by selecting key icon in tray, choose to activate online, but do not register
  9. You may also Roll Back a driver to its previous state
Set up Server Roles
  1. Open Manage your server
  2. Add File Server
  3. Set Disk Quotas
    • 5 MB, 1 MB warn, enforced
  4. Leave Indexing Off
  5. Create a new folder to share, called Users
  6. Set Permissions
    • Administrators have full control
    • Users have Read Write
  1. Add Active Directory
  2. Study the Security Warning, and proceed
  3. Select Domain Controller for a new Domain
  4. Select Domain in a New Forest
  5. The Full DNS name will be lastname.522.templejc.edu
  6. Accept yourname for the NetBIOS name
  7. Accept defaults for partitions, but study options for real networks
  8. Accept SysVol for the location of the database
  9. Choose I will correct the problem later by configuring DNS manually
  10. In the Real world, you will have to choose appropriate permissions
  11. Leave Password field blank (not real world option)


  • Raise Domain (and Forest Functionality) Levels
    • Log in to the domain controller as administrator
    • Choose Start/Administrative Tools/Active Directory Domains and Trusts, and mazimize the console window
    • Right click the name of your domain on the left side of the console, and choose Raise Domain Functional Level
    • Select Windows Server 2003 level, and choose OK after the warning.
    • As there are no other domain controls, replication is a moot point, but you will still need to click OK.
  • Summarize Chapter as part of documentation, and include 'unusual' items from the installation.
