Clinical Competencies

Complete clinical competencies according to the AST® Core
Curriculum-First Scrub(with assist or solo) in minimum of 80 total cases and minimum of 25 of the 80 be first scrub solo.

  1. First Scrub Role with Assist. Student will perform more than 70% of duties in any given surgery with proficiency:
  2. First Scrub Role Solo. Student will perform more than 90% of duties in any given surgery with proficiency:
  3. 10 Points of Performance Duties:
    1. Check supplies and equipment needed for the surgical procedure
    2. Scrub, gown, and glove
    3. Set up the sterile table with instruments, supplies, equipment, and medications/solutions needed for the procedure
    4. Perform appropriate counts with circulator prior to the procedure and before incision is closed
    5. Gown and glove additional surgical team members
    6. Assist with draping the sterile field
    7. Pass instruments and supplies to the sterile surgical team members during the procedure
    8. Maintain the highest standard of sterile technique during the procedure
    9. Prepare sterile dressings
    10. Perform terminal activities of cleaning and preparation of instruments and supplies for O.R.
     
  4. Of the 80 cases, 25 solo scrub cases must be:
    • 10 –  Level I solos must be documented in five Core areas of focus including: Endoscopic(General,OB/GYN,ORL,GU); Open: GI/General/Breast/Hernia; Ortho; ORL/ENT; GU; and Gynecological procedures.
      10 –  Level II solos must be documented in same five Core areas listed above.
      5 –  Level I solos in Specialty areas of focus including: Endoscopic(Cardiothoracic, Neurosurgical), Open: Ophthalmic; Oral & Maxillofacial; Plastic & Reconstructive; Cardiothoracic; Peripheral vascular; and Neurosurgical procedures.

The remaining 65 first scrub with assist can be distributed across the core and specialty areas. Any procedures that are observed, are scrubbed in a role where less than 70% of 10 points of performance are documented, and circulating procedures may be documented but do not count as “counted cases” for meeting clinical case requirements.

Work Policy
All student activities associated with the curriculum especially while students are completing his or her clinical rotations will be educational inI nature. Students will not be receiving any monetary remuneration during this educational experience, nor will he or she be substituted for hired staff personnel within the clinical institution, in the capacity of a surgical technologist.

Take the National CST Examination as required for the program to meet requirements of the Association of Surgical Technologists Accreditation process.
