Temple College is proud to announce their affiliation with Teri Ann Johnson as a Vocal Instructor in the Performing Arts Department. She did undergraduate studies in Musical Theater at Syracuse University, received her bachelor of music from the Conservatory of Music-University of Missouri at Kansas City, and a Master of Music in Voice from Converse College. Her awards and honors include the Athena Voice Competition winner, Murray State; Special Nominee-Irene Ryan Actors Award; 1st Place winner-Advanced Division of NATS, South Carolina state division; Artist Competition Winner, Petrie School of Music at Converse College; Teacher of the Year, Tennessee Governors School Award; and the District Winner-Region Finalist, the Metropolitan Opera auditions.
Mrs. Johnson has had an extensive career in opera and oratorio singing, having performed roles with such companies as South Carolina Opera, Opera Memphis, Nashville Opera, Chattanooga Opera, Light Opera of Oklahoma, Como Opera Guild, Opera South and The Smithsonian Institution Education Outreach Tour. In her concert and recital work she has sung with the Memphis Symphony, Spartanburg Festival Chorus and Orchestra, University of Memphis Brass Ensemble, Salina Symphony (KS), Grand Teton Music Festival (WY), Songfest 2004 (CA), and Memphis Contemporary Chamber Players.
She has taught voice on the college level at the University of Memphis and Converse College. She served as interim coordinator and assistant to the director of opera at Converse College. She gave private voice instruction to students from the 9th-12th grades at Briarcrest Conservatory of Fine Arts. She has taught voice through the University of Memphis Community Music School, teens to adults. She was and educational aide with the Smithsonian Institute’s National Portrait Gallery as a Soprano soloist in their “Portrait’s in Music” adult outreach program.
Since teaching at Temple College, Mrs. Johnson has students consistently singing in the TMEA 2 year College All-State Choir and performing lead roles in musicals at Temple Civic Theatre. Former students are attending UT-Austin, University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, and University of North Texas.
