MEDICAL LABORATORY TECHNOLOGY
GOALS AND OBJECTIVES
The goal of the MLT Program at Temple College is to provide an integrated educational experience, culminating in an Associate in Applied Science degree in Medical Laboratory Technology that enables the graduate to be qualified to serve as general practitioner of medical technology at career?entry level, and to function at a high level of competency within the laboratory setting.
The graduate possesses the fundamental structured background to continue studies both formally and informally in specialty areas of Clinical Laboratory Services.
| The general objectives of the integrated MLT curriculum are: |
a. to provide the student with background in the physical, chemical and biological sciences,
|
b. to provide basic background in the behavioral and social sciences,
|
c. to present opportunities and training in oral and written communication,
|
d. to instruct the student and provide appropriate experienced in the field of laboratory sciences, and
|
| e. to satisfy in part the Associate in Applied Science degree requirements of TC. |
Upon graduation and initial appointment, the medical laboratory technician will be able o perform the following tasks with proficiency, as adopted from NAACLS:*
|
a. collect, process, and analyze biological specimens and other substances,
|
b. perform analytical tests of body fluids, cells, and substances,
|
c. recognize factors that affect procedures and results, and take appropriate action(s) within predetermined limits when corrections are indicated,
|
d. monitor quality control within predetermined limits,
|
e. perform preventative and corrective maintenance of equipment and instruments or refer to appropriate source for repairs,
|
f. apply principles of safety,
|
g. demonstrate professional conduct and interpersonal communication skills with patients, laboratory personnel, other health professionals, and with the public,
|
h. recognize the responsibilities of other laboratory health care personnel and interact with them with respect to their jobs and patient care,
|
1. apply basic scientific principle in learning new techniques and procedures,
|
j. relate laboratory findings to common disease processes, and
|
| k. recognize and act upon individual needs for continuing education as a function of growth and maintenance of professional competence. |
