ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (NON-ACADEMIC) FOR MLT'S
There are minimum performance qualifications for all students who become enrolled in the Medical Laboratory Technician Program. It is recognized that optimum performance may require additional qualifications. These qualifications are based on the requirements for Medical Laboratory Technicians working in health care institutions.
Appearance: Must project an image of neatness and professionalism at all times. Must be willing to adhere to established codes of moderation for dress and appearance.
Communication Skills: Must be able to communicate effectively in written. and spoken English. Must be able to comprehend and respond to both formal and colloquial English both directly and by telephone.
Locomotion: Must be able to move readily from one location to another in such physical settings as the clinical laboratory, patient rooms, emergency center, elevators, hallways, and stairways.
Physical Requirements: Must have ordinary ability to lift and move objects of maximum weight of 15 lbs. Must have fine muscle coordination to allow delicate manipulations of specimens and instruments. Must have unimpaired sense of touch and temperature discrimination.
Visual: Must have ability to distinguish major colors. Visual acuity must be sufficiently corrected to allow rapid reading of laboratory procedures, test requests, instrument dials, computer screens and data, and pipet menisci. Must be able to tolerate conditions of moderate visual strain, e.g., prolonged reading of microscopic observations.
General Personality Features: Must have emotional stability and ability to maintain equanimity in response to emotional provocations. Must be able to relate to a wide variety of.persons representing a broad, psychological, and socioeconomic spectrum. Must consistently exhibit honest, ethical, and professional behavior both in and out of the clinical setting. Must be above reproach in divulging confidential information.
Medical Requirements: In addition to these personal qualifications, each person admitted to the program must have a medical examination completed prior to admission to the program.

SELECTION PROCESS
There are fifteen spaces available for clinical practice in the affiliated hospital laboratories. Selection of students may become necessary in the event there are more students than spaces available. Selection is made almost entirely by academic standing by a committee composed of the Medical Director, Program Director and the Educational Coordinator.
