COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course is a survey of the history of Texas. Topics include: First people of Texas, European approach to Texas, Spanish and French rivalry, exploration and settlement by the Spanish, the coming of people from the United States, relations with Mexico, Texas Revolution, Texas Republic, annexation and statehood, the Civil War, Reconstruction, recovery and Texas in the 20th Century.
GRADE:
Test: Four test will be given with a possible 100 points on each of the test. The test questions will come from the reading assignments, review questions and the class lectures. The test will be a combination of matching questions, multiple choice and essay.
Internet assignments: There will be three assignments the that will required using the Internet and writing a short paper. Two assignment have a possible 25 points and one assignment 5 points.
Book review: In order to receive a grade above D a student must read a book dealing with Texas History, that is approved by the teacher and complete a book review that is judged satisfactory by the teacher.
Final Grade: Students who complete a satisfactory book review, will receive a final grade based on total point using the scale below. Student who do not complete a satisfactory book review will receive a D if their have above 280 points or a F with less than 279 points.

ABSENCES:
The Temple Junior College policy on absences will be followed. It is important for a student to be in all classes and be on time. A student may be dropped from the class after two absences from a night class or four absences from a day class. Test must be taken the day the test is given. Students must be in class on time and be in class for the full time or the student may be dropped.
Dropping this course or withdrawing from the college is the student’s responsibility. Failure to do so will result in the student receiving a performance grade usually an "F".
READING ASSIGNMENTS: The reading assignment should be done before each class meeting so the student will be able to take part in the class discussion.
