WORLD REGIONAL GEOGRAPHY GEOG 1303

Project (30 Points)

DUE: April 21, 2005

Objective: Examine and report on a region of the world using the 5 themes of geography.  Show how the region has global and local viewpoints.  Identify how the US and this region have differing points of view and some conflict. (Not long- just focus on an issue with differing US vs other viewpoint.)

In this assignment you will, 1) prepare a very short country summary, 2) identify and present an issue or cultural/economic/political theme where the US and your country are at odds and 3) Present this to me and the class in a way that is informative and interesting.

Tasks: Review the 5 themes of geography discussed in chapter one (location, place, region, movement and human-earth interaction.)

1.      You can work in groups.

2.      Choose a country or region to discuss.  Create a brief (1-2 pages) overview about the country using the format from the book, (People, Economics, Culture, etc.)  Do not spend your time here- This is a small, introduction.

3.      Search the internet for US news articles about your selected area.  Summarize and discuss in terms of their point of view.

4.      Search for European or Asian newspapers on the net and examine the above issue from the local point of view.  (10 points) Some example sites include:

5.      Create a simple presentation with maps, charts, etc. and your write up.  Prepare this to hand in (Powerpoint presentations are great (but not required.)) (10 points)

6.      In your discussion, focus on how this region shares characteristics and culture with the US.  Identify areas and themes of conflict.  How is this place culturally different from the US? (10 points)

7.      Internet Students will email me their answers or post them to the bulletin board at http://www.nicenet.org

The point of the exercise is to get to know regions of the world better by seeing the region through their eyes and words- not through the eyes of an American.  So have fun with it.  I am looking forward to lively and interesting discussion.
