Question 1:

 

Consider issues and advantages of EU membership.  What are the major challenges that face the EU? (Page 82-84)  (See Box Figure 1 on Page 82.)  What is the potential opportunity and problems for continued European Union growth?  Identify (with specific examples) issues that could arise.  Consider the new countries that joined last year.  Remember to read the article from the "Power Web" section of the text web site:

Question 2:

 

Define the cultural fault lines, shatterbelts, of Europe regarding Islam and historical/cultural issues with Muslims.  Remember that this question refers to issues of borders, areas of transition between cultural regions and internal issues.

 

Question 3:

 

Check out the web sites from the notes on Bosnia-Herzegovina.  Summarize the problems there.  What is the current situation?  Why is it so difficult to solve these issues? (Make sure you discuss the reasons for the conflicts using geographic terms (hint- see question 1.)
