Chapter 3 Spatial Interaction and Spatial Behavior

Homework 3

Due September 21, 2004

1) At the Web Site for the course text (you will have to have a textbook password), complete the following exercises:

1.      Quiz

The web site:

After you answer the questions you will be given the option to email me the results (bottom of page)

2) Law of Retail Gravitation explains how large cities have greater drawing power than smaller ones.  See page 70 for Reilly's equation of the "breaking point" between cities.  Solve this:

Calculate the breaking point for 2 cities (30 miles apart) where P1 has a population of 100,000 and P2 has a population of 60,000.  Use the equation from the book and determine at what “mile” the breaking point would occur.  Where would someone shop (which city) at a certain distance from a city- 10 miles, 20 miles, etc.

3) Explain how the concept of Retail Gravitation works in relation to the gravity model and distance decay.  How does a person’s Time-space prism figure into these decision?
