1. Review and illustrate the definition, content, and means of transmittal of a culture through an example of a culture complex.  Describe a culture including traits, complexes, regions and realms.  Develop a chalkboard table detailing the subsystems of culture and their respective interconnected traits. (Hint- the US is a “car culture.”)  For this exercise, choose another culture or trait of US culture.  You can even use a fictional culture- like Star Trek.

 

2. Using the ideas developed with the class in Topic #1, direct attention to the map of culture realms (Figure 2.4), select two or three widely contrasting “cultures,” and develop a chalkboard table of similarities and differences. Discuss the interlocking nature of the separate cultural composites revealed by the table.
