Course
Description/Objectives
The goal of this
course is to examine and develop an understanding of the discipline of
Environmental Science - i.e. understand the effects that humans and our
environment have on each other. The course is designed for the student
with little background in the sciences. As such, it covers lots of
material in an introductory manner, and prepares the student to continue
his/her understanding and education in any science field.
My goal is to
help you, the student, achieve YOUR goals. I will do whatever I can to
make this a positive learning experience.
Course
Calendar/Schedule
See the Temple
College Class Schedule
This is a 12
Week class - and there are 13 sections.
I recommend that
you do 2 sections the first week and then do 1 section per week for the
rest of the course.
Grading
Each Test will
be worth 100 points. The course grade will be an average of all
the test grades.

Exams
You will take an
exam at the Testing Center when you finish each Chapter.
This is a
SELF-PACED, competency based course. As you master the material, take
the test and move on to the next section.
The first 6 exams will be
available beginning June 1, 2005 and will be available through August
16, 2005
The rest of the tests will be
made available as they are created. However, I expect to have all the
tests available by July 1.
NOTE 3:
each exam
is cumulative – i.e. based upon the knowledge gained from the previously
covered
chapters. Each exam will focus on the current sections, however an
understanding of the material can only come when based on the previous
chapters. This means that you should review each previous chapter prior
to taking every exam.
Exams-at a
Testing Center
The Exams must
be taken at the testing center of your choice, and will be online. When
you register for the class, you must email me the testing center
location and an email contact for that testing center. I will email a
password to the testing center at the appropriate time when the exam is
available. The exam will usually be available for 12 weeks. This
schedule is tentative with respect to specific tests and semester
deadlines. The exam must be finished once it is started. There
will be one opportunity to complete the exam.
NOTE 4:
You are responsible for contacting the Testing Center that you
choose to use and make sure that they will be open at the time you
choose for the test.
Get online - go
to the webpage for your chosen Testing Center and take a look at their
schedule - do it NOW.
What is their email address?
Do NOT wait til the last day the test is available - you will run into
problems - and I will be unsympathetic.

Assignments
will include participation in the Discussion Board at the PageOut
website.
Textbook
Chapters
We will cover
the Introduction, 1, 23, 3, 4, 6, 10, 15, 16, 18, 19, 20, and 21.
Course Policies
Attendance,
Lateness:
Attendance will be graded by completing all course milestones
(TESTS) on
schedule - by the end of the semester.
Because
this is an ONLINE class, you are responsible for completing the
material.
NOTE 5: If
you find that you cannot complete the course, it is YOUR
responsibility to drop the class. If you do not drop the class,
I will average your existing scores and 0’s for any uncompleted exams. I will then assign a letter grade
and report that to the Temple College Admissions and Records
office.
Class
Participation:
Students are expected to complete course work on time and actively participate in the
discussion board.
Students are
expected to be active participants in the discussion board
and activities that accompany this course. This will allow the student
and instructor to develop an online relationship similar to that of
a physical classroom. I stress participation to challenge students
to develop their own opinions and ideas.
Readings, CD and
Online Review:
This course
is reading intensive and includes
studying illustrations either in the book, on the accompanying CD,
or online. Students are expected to read the assigned chapters and
complete the assigned self-tests. Make sure that you schedule
enough time each week.
Academic
Dishonesty:
Cases of
academic dishonesty on exams or class assignments will be referred
to the Vice President of Student Services for disciplinary action.
The Student Handbook states the College's rules and policies on this
matter.

Class Notes
Class Notes are presented for each Chapter under its section. Use the
Class Notes to guide your reading in the textbook and study of online
materials.
NOTE 6:
There is more information available to you in the book and on the website
than is required for success in the course. The student will be tested based
on these Class Notes. Use the
Class Notes to focus
your studies as you move through the course.
