FAQs for ENVR1301 Environmental Science Internet Class.

Temple College Distance Education Webpage

http://www.templejc.edu/dist_ed/dist_ed.htm

Please explore this Web Site to learn more about Temple College Distance Education.

1. How do I find out general information about the course: textbook,

 timeline, grading, testing, etc?

Read the TC course website:

http://www.templejc.edu/dept/EnviroScience/RHicks/RHicks.htm

Read the syllabus, calendar, and Chapters section.

2. How do I attend Orientation for the class?

The class orientation is online – Read the syllabus and do the assignment at the end of the syllabus.

Remember: you must use your TC email account and include the contact info for the testing center you will use.

3. How do I email the instructor and use email authentication?

Email is the primary means of communication for this course.

Get my email from the Temple College Home Page.

Identify yourself and put ENVR in the subject line.

eg:

Subject: Jones, ENVR, ...description of message… .

I will NOT open emails that I do not recognize - the potential for email virus is too great.

You are required to use your TC email account for any course correspondence, once the course begins..

TC's website has an integrated virus checker and your account is less likely to be full.

4. Are there any openings left?

Check the TC main page 'class schedule' site. Choose 'Summer 2005'

and put 'Hicks' as the instructor.

5. What is the course code?

Here are the numbers and id's from the TC Class Schedule URL:

ENVR-1301-1002 (1271)

This is NOT the Course ID for PageOut, the online testing and bulletin board website.  See question #13 below for more info.

6. Will ENVR 1301 fulfill the requirements for a LAB science?

Yes, BUT you must enroll in a separate LAB class in order to get LAB credit.

ENVR 1301 is  a very basic INTRODUCTORY class for students with little

prior background in science.

7. Where are the testing centers?

There are testing centers located across Texas and, I believe, the US.  You have to find the one you

want to use.  Get the contact info and email it to me.  See the syllabus.

Check with your local community college. Or perhaps local school system.

TC's testing center is in One College Centre - second floor.

I assume that any location that does THEA or SAT testing will be a certified testing center.

8. When is the Testing Center open?

For Temple College, see Student Information on the TC Main Page.

   www.templejc.edu

YOU are responsible for determining when the Testing Center is open, and when

it's schedule fits your needs.

9. Can I take the test at home?

see the syllabus.

For the self tests - yes

For the graded exams - No.

10. Will the tests be online?

See the syllabus.

Yes.

11. How much study time will this course require?

The class will require at least 6-12 hours study per week, depending on how fast you study and your science background.

12. How do I get a Course ID for PageOut?

You will use PageOut for about 10% of the class - the other 90% will be book and the publisher's web site.  See the syllabus for the publishers website.

Once the semester begins, TC will give me a list of students registered in the course. I will assign

each student a Course ID based on his/her TC Student ID. Until that time, use the course website at:

http://www.templejc.edu/dept/EnviroScience/RHicks/Hicks.htm

We will use PageOut for the online Exams for each Section and for discussion board activities.

go to http://ralphhicks.pageout.net/   Choose the Environmental Science course and LOGIN/Register as a student.

PageOut Registration requires:

   1. a valid email address (you must use your TC email),

   2. Course ID that is unique to our online course

   3.

choose: Environmental Science

choose: student registration - follow the instructions

Now, you will use this userid and password when you login to Pageout at my course website

14.  What is the best approach for studying this material?

FIRST!! - Study the chapters I've posted on my URL at TC, using your book.

Second - Use the publishers online support.

Third - Take the online self-tests at PageOut.

Fourth - LAST- Take the assigned Exams at PageOut.

15. Where are the class notes?

These are actually Study and Review Questions.

Start on the 'Syllabus' page.  On the left side of the page is a vertical yellow bar with

'Homepage'

'Syllabus'

'Calendar'  and more

the Class notes are under the section titled Chapters

followed by Introduction, Chapter 1, etc.

http://www.templejc.edu/dept/EnviroScience/RHicks/ENVR1301Int/ENVR1301Int00_intro.htm

Any page/link on the vertical bar will get you to any set of notes/questions you need

16. How do I take the test online at the Testing Center?

Taking Tests on the Pageout website.

go to www.ralphhicks.pageout.net

e website.

For the exams at the Testing Center

you will login to my course website,

Go to gradebook (list on left side of page)

Choose 'assessments'  - will take you to a list of the self tests, quizzes, and chapter tests.

Choose the Chapter Test that you want to take.

this will take you to a "Proctor Login" screen - the Testing Center Personnel will enter the Password that I will send for each test.

Then you can take the test.

You will have as long as you want.

You may take each chapter test 1 (one) time only.
