DONNA CALVERT
1941-1993

In 1964, Donna Calvert graduated from Arkansas State University with a Master's Degree in English. Shortly thereafter, she began her teaching career at Temple Junior College. For the next twenty-nine years, she taught English there. During that time, she demonstrated qualities that endeared her to students and faculty alike. Those who knew her also knew her values and concerns. Ms. Calvert was a kind and loving person, a gentle person who loved and protected all living things, particularly her cats which she referred to as her "babies." No one dared swat a spider or cricket or any living creature in Ms. Calvert's presence. Her love of nature and living things was incorporated into her teaching. Students who studied British Literature under her guidance knew that William Wordsworth, nature's high priest, was her favorite poet and that nature was one of her greatest loves.

In her teaching, Ms. Calvert was thorough. When she had explained a poem, for example, her students understood the content and meaning of the poem, and they understood that at test time their responses should be as complete and thorough as her teaching. Her presentation of literature was so well organized and methodical that her students were able to learn and appreciate literature and pass her tests, discussing each question, "thoroughly."

Students learned more than literature from Ms. Calvert. They also had the opportunity to learn important values that would help them succeed in every area of life. More than anything, she exhibited courage. Near the end or her teaching career and in failing health, she demonstrated the depth of her character and her commitment to teaching. Even though she was not well physically, her spiritual strength enabled her to continue to fulfill her teaching responsibilities in a positive cheerful manner.

This scholarship is a memorial, awarded in her honor and provided by those who knew and loved her. The recipient of this scholarship receives more than a monetary award. He or she receives, in a sense, a legacy from a person who deserves to be remembered and emulated.
