Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions:

  1. What is the difference between an academic education course (EDUC) and a technical education course (EDTC)?

An academic education course (EDUC) is a transferable course that will be accepted by most 4-year public institutions toward a Bachelor of Science degree (Field of Study 4 through 8 Generalist) in Education. Following the Field of Study Curriculum will result in the awarding of an Associate of Arts in Teaching with a Grade 4 through 8 Certification.

A technical education course (EDTC) is one that satisfies the state's "No Child Left Behind Act" for para-educators and may lead to the awarding of an Associate of Applied Science degree in Educational Personnel but may not be accepted for transfer by a 4-year institution.

  2. How long have community colleges been able to offer the AAT?

This program was approved at the April meeting of the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board.

  3. Why is earning an AAT so important if I want to be a teacher?

First, earning the AAT makes the transition to public universities seamless.

Second, education courses are offered in the freshmen and sophomore years so aspiring teachers can get hands-on experience early in their educational coursework.

  4. Are there any programs to help pay for my education?

Yes, in addition to typical methods of financial aid, an Educational Aide Exemption may be available for a para-educator who is employed by a school district and pursues an AAT.

Furthermore, students graduating with an AAT are eligible for other forms of financial assistance.
