General Academic and Liberal Arts Objectives of the Economics Curriculum
- Students will develop analytical and critical thinking skills.
- Students will develop the ability to conceptualize problems and apply analytical tools to solve them.
- Students will develop effective writing communication skills.
- Students will develop effective oral communication skills.
- Students will learn research and methodological skills.
- Students will learn to recognize and apply connections of important information and ideas within and among learning areas. The social sciences are a highly integrated set of disciplines. Understanding economic phenomena requires familiarity with principles of other disciplines, including political science, sociology, history, and psychology. Students must grasp that the connections between the parts of social science—and their relations to other academic areas—are the key to better understanding how people interact. Students in economics must begin to understand data collection and analysis, library and field research, debate, discussion and decision making—all of which are key elements to successful careers.
- Students will develop effective computer skills and gain familiarity with the Internet.
- Students will learn to contribute to the classroom community individually and as members of groups. Study in this field encourages students to listen carefully to the views of all members of a group and to represent their own points of view appropriately and effectively. The group benefits from the individual knowledge and skills of its members. Each individual—like each part of social science itself—holds an important relationship to the whole.
