GENERAL INFORMATION

1. How do I find out general information about the course: textbook,

      timeline, grading, testing, etc?

Read the course information under the Courses and Delivery link on the Distance Education webpage.

OR

Read the instructor's TC course website:

http://www.templejc.edu/dept/Biology/RHicks/RHicks.htm

Read the:
       Syllabus,
       Calendar,
       FAQ,
       Learning Objectives.

2. How do I attend Orientation for the class?

You can find info for the Orientation on the instructor's TC homepage, under the heading BIOL 2404, Internet class.

The class orientation is online in D2L in the form of a QUIZ – Read the

                Orientation,

                Syllabus,

                FAQ,

                Agenda

and do the assignment at the end of the orientation.
Remember: you must use your TC email account.

3. When should I start studying for the class and taking the tests?

RIGHT NOW - ASAP!  Get a jump on the semester!

Because there are more chapters in this course than there are weeks in either the regular 16-week semesters, or the
shorter 12-week summer semester, I recommend that you immediately start studying the Class Notes located on the
          web. (
See Class Notes, below)

You can start taking the tests within the first week of classes for that semester.
I will try to have them ready on first day of class for that semester, but things happen when dealing with computers and
technology.  Go to D2L and you will be able to see which tests are available (
see Test Location for more

             info, below).

You can start studying WITHOUT accessing D2L... use your book and get started.

4. How do I email the instructor and use email authentication?

Email is the primary means of communication for this course.

Get my email from the TC Biology Home Page.

In the SUBJECT line put:  "your last name", IAP, "the semester in which you are enrolled", "describe the topic of your email"

eg:

Subject: smith, IAP Fall08, computer failed                 OR
talley, IAP Sum07, Nervous System Question

I will NOT open emails that I do not recognize - the potential for email virus is too great.

You are required to use your TC email account for any course correspondence, once the course begins..

TC's website has an integrated virus checker and your account is less likely to be full.

4. Are there any openings left?

Check the TC main page 'class schedule' site. Choose the appropriate semester.
Put 'Hicks' as the instructor.

ASK your counselor if the Department has ok'ed letting more students into the ONLINE classes. Often
we will allow more students to take the ONLINE class than is indicated in the class schedule.

5. What is the course code?

Here are the numbers and id's from the TC Class Schedule URL:

BIOL-2404-1002 (0600)  - the number in parentheses is the course code and will change with each semester
       - see the semester class schedule for the appropriate course code for YOUR semester.

6. Is the Introduction to Anatomy and Physiology the same as a regular Anatomy and Physiology course?

No, this is a 1 semester, Introductory class that prepares the student to enter the vocational nursing program
or the EMT/EMS programs.  It is a very basic, INTRODUCTORY level class, for students with little prior
              background in science.

NOTE: this class MAY NOT transfer to other colleges or universities. Check with your college's departmental counselor to verify that this course fits your needs.

7. How much study time will this course require?

The class will require at least 6-10 hours study per week during 16 week semesters, and 9-15 hours per week
during 12 week semesters, depending on how fast you study and your science background.

Keep in mind that this is study time that the student must schedule.  If your personal schedule is such that you do
not have these hours to study - then do NOT sign up for this course.

In the Calendar web page, I have estimated the amount of time that I think should be spent on each chapter.

8. What is the best approach for studying this material?

FIRST!! - Study the chapters I've posted under the 'CONTENT' tab on D2L (or the class notes on my TC webpage for this course), using your book and the CD to enhance your understanding and answer the questions.

Second - Use the publishers online support.

Third - IF YOU WANT - Take the online self-tests at the publisher's URL.  I do NOT control the content of these self-tests.
Therefore, you will likely encounter questions not covered in this course. When you encounter a question not covered in
the course, skip it and don't worry that you don't know that material.

Fourth - LAST- Take the assigned Exams at D2L.

9. Where are the class notes?

Start on the 'D2L' Home webpage. Find the bar along the top with the tabs: 'Course Home'  'Content' 'Discussions' etc.

select 'Content'  you will then see the Syllabus, Orientation, FAQ, ClassNotes, and Laboratory Assignments sections.

10. Where are the Lab Assignments?

Start on the 'D2L' Home webpage. Find the bar along the top with the tabs: 'Course Home'  'Content' 'Discussions' etc.

select 'Content'  you will then see the Syllabus, Orientation, FAQ, ClassNotes, and Laboratory Assignments sections.

The 'Lab Assignments' are on the D2L 'Contents' webpage
These are the anatomy that you must be able to identify during the lab quizzes..

11. Where are the 'Tests' located?

Login to D2L: find the 'Quizzes' tab.

The quizzes are listed there.

12. Do I have to buy a new book or a Lab manual?

No. You can purchase a used book.

There is NO access code required  IF you bought one. take it back

There is NO lab book required. If you bought one, take it back.

13. What are the deadlines for this course?

You MUST have read and tested over chapters 1, 2, 3, 17, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9 by the Midterm.

You MUST have read and tested over chapters, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 18,  and 19 by the Final.

You MUST finish the remainder (i.e. Ch 20) by 2:00 pm on Tuesday of Finals week.

**** if you are graduating in the current semester - and must have a 'grade' submitted to your school prior to the actual end date for this course - you MUST complete all the online lecture and lab tests prior to the date your school needs the 'grade' from me.   I will not submit an incomplete grade.

14. Is there any 'bonus' or 'extra credit'?

Yes. There are several ways to get 'extra credit'.

FIRST:  each student that completes the orientation, progress reports, and tests PRIOR to the deadlines indicated on the
Calendar page, will receive 1 point for each Deadline accomplished - added to the total points score.

The student can earn between 5 and 10 total points added to the total points score by meeting the deadlines.

Annotate this in each progress report.

Second: occasionally, there are Bonus Quizzes that may be taken.  The points scored on each
bonus quiz will be added to the score on  the TEST over that chapter.

Third:  On occasion there will be outside activities, such as a museum exhibit, that correlate to this course.
I will add 5 points to the TOTAL score (prior to averaging) for visiting these exhibits - usually only 1 exhibit
       per semester.

Participation in these activities is NOT required and will not be supported by TC. Participation is 100%
voluntary.  You must determine for yourself if the extra credit points are worth the effort.

Check the Biol 2404 homepage for any of these type 'extra credit' activities.

****  NOTE: Extra credit and/or Bonus points are NOT required to pass this course.

TESTS and GRADING

15. Can I take the test at home?

See the syllabus.

For the self tests - yes

For the graded exams, bonus tests, and the Labs: Yes

16. Will the tests be online?

See the syllabus.

Yes.

17. Is there a Lab with the course?

The lab is integrated into the class.
You will receive a 'lab' credit when you take this class.
BUT - You do not sign up for a separate lab.

You WILL take online lab quizzes.

18. Are there Lab practicals/tests/exams with this course?

Yes.

Lab assignments are located under the 'Content' tab on D2L.  Look for 'Laboratory Assignments'.

19. Where are the testing centers?

IF you need a testing center, you might try the following locations:

You may use any Certified Testing Center that you wish.  Some students have found that they must pay the Testing Center, though.  Check with the one you choose.  Some Testing Centers that I know of are located at:

Temple College Main Campus  (TC)
Temple College at Taylor (TCaT)
Central Texas College (CTC) - Killeen
McClennan County Community College  (MCC) - Waco

Others: Call the local School District, or the local College or University.

There are testing centers located across Texas and I believe the US.  You have to find the one you
want to use.  Get the contact info and email it to me.  See the Syllabus.

Check with your local community college. Or perhaps local school system.

TC's Main Campus Testing Center is in One College Centre - second floor.

I assume that any location that does THEA or SAT testing will be a certified testing center.

20. When is the Testing Center open?

For TC, see Student Information on the TC Main Page.

          www.templejc.edu

For other testing centers, go to their homepage.

21. How do I take the test online at the Testing Center?

You do NOT need to take the tests at a testing center.

However, if you so desire - For the TESTING CENTER  ...  You will need to go to the Testing Center, sign in with the Staff. You need a photo ID.

Next, you will logon to the Testing Center PC with your student login (at TC main campus).

Open a web browser, go to https://templejc.desire2learn.com/   and login as a student.

Once logged in, find the 'Quizzes' tab, and the quiz you want to take.

- take the test online.

22. Why did my test score fail to register with D2L?

I do not know. Email me and I will troubleshoot it and/or reset the attempt.

When using email, PLEASE use the suggestions for How to Write a Post.  An effective post/email includes
all needed information to diagnose and 'fix' the problem. Read the "Orientation" again for more info.
After each test that you complete - Wait a few minutes and then check and verify that D2L accepted that test.
YOU are responsible for keeping track of the tests you've taken and verifying that the
grade shows up in the gradebook.

23. When is the last day to take the online tests?

For the normal 16 week semesters: the LAST day to take quizzes is the TUESDAY of Finals Week, by 2:00 PM.
I will download the grades at 2:00 PM, any exams not completed will be scored as 0 (zero) and averaged into the semester grade.

CAVEAT:  I strongly recommend that you have all the exams finished by the Friday BEFORE Finals Week.  Many students will be competing for computer time at the Testing Center during Finals Week - you may have trouble getting
access.

For the 11 or 12 week summer semesters, the LAST day to take quizzes is the last day of finals, by 2 pm.

24.  What happens if I do not finish the exams and labs by the end of the semester?

If you cannot finish the lecture or lab exams or class, YOU are responsible for dropping the class, the instructor will NOT automatically drop you.  If you do not go to Admissions and Records and drop the class, the completed exam scores will be averaged with 0 (zero) for any uncompleted exams and labs and a grade assigned.

Note the last day to drop the course on your schedule that you build in your dayplanner or calendar :-)

25. How is the course grade computed?

10% of the course grade: Orientation and Attendence.
Completion of Orientation assignments, on time.
Completion of the 3 progress quizzes.
      Other assignments

10% of the course grade: Discussion Board participation.
Each student will read and post to the discussion boards.  (see syllabus for more info)

80% of the course grade:  Average of all Lecture and Lab exam grades.
The lowest exam grade will be dropped.
The remaining exam grades and the two Lab grades will be averaged to generate a course grade.
The Bonus test points will be added to the Exam grades.
