Major Donations in 2002Janicek Memorial Scholarship EndowmentTemple College Foundation recently received a gift in the sum of $200,000 from the estate of Mr. John D. Janicek, a former Alumnus of Temple College. The gift is a bequest to the Janicek Memorial Scholarship Endowment which was begun by Mr. Janicek's mother. His brother, Mr. H.A. Janicek of Georgia and his sister Anna L. Fulbright and her husband, John W. Fulbright of Waco, survive Mr. Janicek. The college and the foundation appreciate the gift, which will provide scholarships for deserving students and remember Mr. John D. Janicek for his generosity to Temple College and its future students. The gift will continue to grow and be a source of hope and benefit to future Alumni. We honor the memory of Mr. John D. Janicek and will remember his generosity when we award scholarships under the Janicek Memorial Scholarship Endowment to students who will benefit directly from his gift and become future Alumni of Temple College. We are very appreciative of the family of Mr. Janicek who has been extremely gracious and helpful in attending to all of the details of the gift. Library expansion reality after sisters 'angelic' gift The new 4,000-square-foot wing of the Hubert M. Dawson Library is completed and evolving into a lively learning center for students and staff thanks to a bequest left by sisters who loved learning, reading and traveling. The expansion project, completed in early 2002, was made possible through the generosity of Temple sisters, the late Clara Mae McKimmey and Effie Lee Robinson, who willed $1.9 million to the college. Their photos grace the new addition as well as a picture of their grandmother, who taught them to love education. Mrs. Robinson and Mrs. McKimmey, both widows, lived simple, frugal lives. In 1983, the sisters began estate planning, stipulating that, upon their deaths, their assets would be split between the two institutions they loved the most -- Temple College and their church. Only after Mrs. Robinson's death in 2000 and Mrs. McKimmey's the following year was the total amount of their gift revealed. The new north wing -- home for more books and book shelves, comfortable chairs and plenty of work tables for studenfs books and papers -- is part of a larger library expansion. The remodeling also included refurbishing the 1965 building, creating a computer lab, expanding the number of student use computers as well as adding a user friendly circulation desk and offices. Douglas Wheeler, their second cousin, said at the April 2002 dedication, "They serve as an example to the rest of us to be generous." Mr. Douglas Ferrill Mr. Douglas Ferrill donated $50,000 to the endowned scholarship fund. This gift help start the foundation on its way toward the $250,000 annual scholarship goal. The $50,000 will be divided among the following three scholarship endowment funds: Mrs. Jack Calvert Mrs. Jack Calvert donated $10,000 to be divided between the Jack Calvert and the Donna Calvert Scholarship Endowment Funds. The Calvert family has been strong supporters of the college in all areas including financial.
